Ondo State Diaspora Organisation Europe receives with dismay and sadness the numerous sad news coming from our lovely Ondo State as we approach the Governorship Election scheduled for Saturday 10 October 2020.

Election is not war! But the only known and globally acceptable instrument of democratically making a choice of leadership or representative forthe people.

Hence, we are taken aback to hear of lives and properties been lost just as a result of the upcoming election. Politicians and their active supporters should know that no one’s political ambition is worth the blood of any person.

We therefore call on all citizens of Ondo State to exercise their franchise in a peaceful and civilized manner. We all need peace in our dear state; without which development is not effective. Investors are watching and making plans based on the level of stability of any economy.

Political debates, aside from campaigns, are one of the medium of reaching out to the voters and stakeholders and opportunity for political parties and their candidates to present and articulate their manifestoes to the electorates. Hence, political debates are normally organized by unbiased and reputable organisations under a free and fair atmosphere.

This understanding explains why we are very shocked and sad to learn of the unfolding drama with the dis-invitation of some candidates from the debate tagged as the Face the Voters Initiative. We believe that during elections, all candidates are deemed equal and have the same right to be heard by the electorates. Therefore, it is unprofessional and an embarrassment that invitation letters that had been extended to all political parties participating in the upcoming elections by the management of the β€œFace Voters Initiative” was withdrawn with the flimsy excuse of logistics.

Supporters of all the political parties had been looking forward to listening to their candidates and also the opportunity for undecided voters to use the unique opportunity to compare the candidates side-by-side.

On this note, we kindly appeal to all politicians and their supporters to give peace a chance during and after this electioneering period. We do not have any other state to call ours. The stakeholders should behave in civil and professional manner; and not create atmosphere for fanning of embers of discord.

Unfortunately, the suspicious last-minute withdrawal of invitation from some candidates of the Governorship Election by the management of β€œFace the Voters Initiative” is nothing but an act that can create unpleasant and bad-blood within the candidates and their supporters, who had been looking forward to the live Governorship Debate, as they may think that there is more to the excuse given by the management of Face the Voters Initiative.

Once again, we appeal for peace and tranquility in our dear state during and after the elections. Development of Ondo State is sacrosanct and should not be taken for granted by any political party or person in the name of election and partisanship. We however urge all registered voters to come out en-masse peacefully on Saturday 10 October 2020 to vote for their preffered candidate while they observe the COVID-19 protocols.
