NIGERIA At 60: Lessons & Dates from History

As Nigeria speeds towards its 60th anniversary of independence I would like to share some key dates in its recent history that major events have happened with coincidence.

15th January, 1966 (First Nigerian coup led by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu).

15th January 1970, ( declaration to end Nigerian Civil war) Instruments of surrender handed over by Col.Effiong to Obasanjo.

29th July, 1966 (Second Nigerian coup popularly known as the counter coup led by Lt.Col Murtala Ramat Muhammed).

29th July, 1975 (Nigeria’s third coup led by Brigadier Murtala Muhammed toppled General Yakubu John Gowon.

27th August,1985 (Nigeria’s sixth coup led by Major General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida toppled Gen.Muhammadu Buhari.

27th August, 1993 – General Ibrahim Babangida ‘steps aside’ after annulling the presidential elections which precipitated a crisis.
