Cause For Alarm In Ondo Gubernatorial Election As APC May Be Unable To Field A Candidate On Technicalities

It seems like peace is far-fetched in the already troubled Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressive Congress (APC).

This opinion is based on the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned that the party may not have a candidate for the October 10, 2020 scheduled governorship election in Ondo state.

In a letter written by INEC, in response to APC’s notice to the commission on its scheduled primary election, the electoral body warned that the APC’s letter was in clear violation of extant electoral Guidelines of the Commission and until the party did the needful, it stood no chance of fielding any candidates in the coming election in Ondo state.

The said letter sent by INEC was authorised by the Secretary of the Commission, Mrs. Rose Onarah-Anthony reads as follows;

Please refer to your letter with reference: APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/020/013 which was received at the commission on 18th June, 2020.

“The commission notes that your notice scheduling the conduct of APC Ondo state Governorship primary on the 20th of July 2020 was signed by only the Acting National Secretary.

“This is contrary to the provision of Article 4.4 of the Commission’s regulations and agauidlines for the conduct of party primaries which requires that such notices shall be jointly signed by the National Chairman and NATIONAL Secretary of the political party.

The rejection of the APC’s letter portends serious danger to the APC as the party’s leadership crises deepens every single day.

The offices of both the National Chairman and the National Secretary have remained in contention with the suspension of the erstwhile National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole.

Meanwhile, President Buhari today has in line with the provision of the law supported the candidature of the former Secretary of APC , Victor Giadom as the new Acting Chairman of the Party.
